ZUMIX’s mission is to empower young people to build successful futures for themselves—transforming lives and communities through music, technology, and creative employment.

In 2004, ZUMIX bought a long-abandoned fire station from the city of Boston and converted it into a beautiful, functional and inspiring cultural performance space. Completed in 2009, the ZUMIX Firehouse received Gold LEED Certification and became a model in its diverse East Boston neighborhood for green building design and energy efficiency.

The ZUMIX Firehouse includes state-of-the-art sound and music recording studios. Through their award-winning educational programs, ZUMIX offers young people an opportunity to learn music production, songwriting, filmmaking, radio, and podcasting.

In April 2022, ZUMIX took the next step in its sustainable journey with the installation of a 10 kW solar array on the roof of the firehouse.

The project was entirely funded and made possible by two individual donors and the Tern Foundation’s TernSOLAR challenge grant. For the solar installation process, ZUMIX partnered with Resonant Energy, a certified B Corporation specializing in bringing accessible solar options to communities with limited resources including affordable housing units and nonprofit organizations throughout Massachusetts.

Grant Amount: $17,406

ZUMIX is excited to take the next step toward sustainability with our new solar panels. We hope our adoption of this green technology will help inspire our neighbors to follow suit, and to keep working together toward a better future for ourselves and our planet.
